Scott Quinnell “The Assist” Limited Edition
Ask any Welsh rugby supporter what their favourite try of all time is, and you’ll be listening for a long time. From Gareth Edwards’ lung bursting 75 yard dash against Scotland in 1972 to Shane Williams’ insane injury time winner against the same opponents in 2010 Wales have been spoilt for choice when it comes to great tries over the years. But let’s cut to the chase. Time and time again in many surveys and polls the try that gets voted the greatest ever also gets my vote.
I was in the Wembley stand in 1999 with my father the day Wales snatched the last Grand Slam of the old Five Nations from England’s grasp with a last minute try so dynamic and thrilling it took a nations breath away. People don’t have to be reminded of Scott Gibbs brilliant, bouncing, side stepping run which broke English hearts that day, but some may need a nudge about the other Scott involved. It was a set move from a three man lineout which led to the ball being delivered via Rob Howley to a peroxide haired number eight called Scott Quinnell.

Scott’s pedigree is legendary. The son of the Scarlet’s Viking, Derek and nephew of the king himself Barry John, the Quinnell boys were destined for great things.
On that day Scott played alongside his giant brother Craig but it was Scott’s juggle of the ball and readjusted pass which, for a fraction of a second, distracted the English defence just long enough for his namesake to burst through five tackles and score the greatest try in Welsh Rugby History.
“The Assist” is my tribute to that Golden Moment and Golden Haired pass which I was grateful to witness. It still makes me smile when I think about it today… 26 years on.
